NY Mets Announce One-Year Countdown to the Games!

On August 26, 2010, the New York Mets announced the one-year countdown to the 2011 World Police & Fire Games in New York City. The New York Mets, strong supporters of New York’s firefighters and police officers, opened up their doors and welcomed the 2011 World Police & Fire Games to Citi-Field. During a pre-game ceremony, the WPFG Executive Board was escorted onto the field behind home plate to accept the New York Mets “Spirit Award”. After accepting the award, the 2011 WPFG video was shown on the large screen in center field.

The 2011 World Police & Fire Games will be held in New York City from August 26 – September 5, 2011. More than 15,000 police officers and firefighters from over 70 countries will compete in 69 sports during the 11-day competition. The New York Games will respectfully coincide with the 10-year anniversary of September 11th. New Yorkers will have the opportunity to remember those lost on that tragic day as well as show gratitude for the international support that flooded into the City during our darkest time.

More than 350 police officers, firefighters, families, friends and partners joined the 2011 World Police & Fire Games Executive Board on the Pepsi Porch for a fun evening of baseball. Jim Carney, President of the 2011 World Police & Fire Games said "Being at Citi Field to celebrate the year-out anniversary is great. The 2011 World Police & Fire Games will be a special time for all – it will be a time for New Yorkers to remember those lost on September 11th and also thank the thousands of police officers and firefighters from around the world that came to New York City’s aid in our time of need. I am proud to partner with the New York Mets in marking this important countdown."

Everyone can be a part of the Games. We are recruiting 7,500 volunteers to be a part of TEAM 2011 and we are actively seeking sponsors. The sporting competitions are free to the public.
