** 2011 WPFG Situation Report as of 2200 hours 8/27 **
Storm conditions remain unchanged. Tornado warning remains in effect until 5am Sunday morning.
Below is the latest information from the New York City Office of Emergency Management. For more information visit the OEM Website at Office of Emergency Management.
* The latest forecast has the epicenter of the hurricane hitting east of the five boroughs.
Tropical storm winds of 40 miles an hour and higher will start about 9 o’clock tonight, continue to increase to hurricane strength through the morning.
* Mayor is asking buildings to shut off their elevators so that if power goes out, people will not be stuck in elevators.
* There are 78 hurricane shelters and 8 special medical centers across the city. No one will be turned away. * City has moved to a zone fare system to encourage ride sharing and increase the capacity of each cab. Liveries and commuter vans have also been authorized to pick up street hails anywhere in the city.
* If you live in a high-rise, especially on the 10th floor or above, stay away from the windows in case they break and shatter. If you have a yard, or a porch, or a balcony, or any outdoor space, make sure everything, including outdoor furniture, is tied down or secured properly. * If you encounter an emergency, call 911. If it's not an emergency, please call 311 instead so you can keep 911 open for the most urgent calls.
* Charge your cell phones now.
Staten Island Ferry service will be suspended as of 10:00 PM Saturday or earlier if the winds come earlier. Restoration of service is dependent on weather conditions. Please note - for planning purposes, all passengers should anticipate service suspension may actually occur anytime after 6:00 pm.

All cultural institutions are closed for the weekend.

We continue to appreciate your patience and understanding. We are asking you to understand that there will have to be a full assessment of venues and transportation before we can re-open the Games. Internally we are making great efforts to assess current venue availability, search out alternative sites, evaluate personnel needs and referee availability, as well as gauge competitor interest.
Please continue to be safe. Together, we will weather this storm, carry the Torch through to the Closing Ceremony and move on with the Games. There are many sporting events which will experience only a minimal disruption, if any. We have lots of competition over the next week or so and there will be lots of smiles, lots of friends, and lots of memories. As First Responders we overcome, we adapt and we persevere. Thanks for being here in New York City. We look forward to seeing you on the fields, on the courts, and on the ice.
Thank you.
