Adelaide, Australia 2007

In March of 2007, seventy competitors, consisting of members from FDNY, NYPD and the Port Authority Police Department, traveled from New York City to Adelaide, Australia, to participate in the World Police & Fire Games. Since the inception of the Games in 1985, Australia has the distinction of twice hosting the event. In 1995, the Games were hosted by Melbourne, and in 2007, Adelaide. The first time Australia hosted the games in Melbourne, over 7,000 athletes from around the world competed. In 2007 almost 8,000 individuals participated in this monumental event.

By all accounts the Adelaide games were as great as Melbourne. The New York City team collectively won numerous medals in varied events. Most importantly though, every competitor, win or lose, had a wonderful time. The people of Adelaide treated New Yorkers like long lost friends. Everywhere we went, we were greeted with a smile and a” g’day mate!”. The local populace went out of their way to make our visit comfortable and enjoyable. Some went as far as inviting new found friends into their homes for birthday parties and barbecues. Overall, the Adelaide experience was an unforgettable one. World class sporting venues, coupled with top notch athletes and the allure of Australia has brought the World Police and Fire Games to the next level.
